Part 1 — The Statue and the Swallow

High above a city stood a beautiful statue. It was called the Happy Prince. The statue was covered in fine gold. It had two bright sapphires for eyes. On its sword was a large red ruby.

One night, a little swallow flew to the city. His friends had gone to Egypt. But he had stayed behind. He decided to rest at the statue’s feet.

While resting, drops of water fell on the swallow. The swallow looked up. He saw the Happy Prince was crying! The Prince said he lived happily in a palace when he was alive. He never knew about sadness or poverty. But now, from his high column, he could see all the suffering in the city.

Part 2 — The Ruby for the Sick Boy

The Prince asked the swallow for help. Far away, a poor woman was sewing a dress. Her little boy was very sick with fever. The boy was asking for oranges. But the mother had no money.

The Prince asked the swallow to take the ruby from his sword to the mother. At first, the swallow said no. He wanted to go to Egypt. But the Prince looked so sad that the swallow agreed to help.

The swallow carried the ruby to the poor woman’s house. He left it on the table. The boy felt cool and started getting better. The swallow felt warm inside. The Prince said: “That is because you have done a good action.”

Part 3 — The Sapphires for the Playwright

The next day, the swallow came to say goodbye. But the Prince stopped him again. He told the swallow about a young man in a cold room. This young man was a playwright. He was trying to write a play. But it was freezing and he had no firewood.

The Prince asked the swallow to take one of his sapphire eyes to the playwright. The swallow was very sad. He did not want to take the Prince’s eye. But the Prince insisted. The swallow carried the sapphire to the playwright. The young man was very happy and continued writing.

Part 4 — The Second Sapphire for the Matchgirl

The Prince still had one sapphire eye left. He saw a little matchgirl in the square. She had dropped all her matches. She was crying because her father would beat her if she came home with no money.

The Prince asked the swallow to give his last eye to the matchgirl. The swallow was very upset. He told the Prince he would be completely blind. But the Prince commanded him. The swallow gave the sapphire to the matchgirl.

Now the Prince was blind. The swallow decided to stay with the Prince forever. He said: “I will stay with you always.”

Part 5 — The Gold Leaves and the End

The swallow flew over the city each day. He told the Prince about hungry children. He saw rich people in their fine houses. He saw poor people begging at the gates.

The Prince asked the swallow to take off all his gold leaves one by one. The swallow gave the gold to the poor. Now the Prince looked dull and grey.

Winter came. The swallow grew very cold. He could not fly to Egypt anymore. He was dying. He flew to the Prince’s shoulder one last time and kissed him. Then he fell down dead at the Prince’s feet.

At that moment, the Prince’s lead heart broke in two.

The next morning, the Mayor saw the statue. He said it looked shabby and ugly. He ordered the statue to be melted in a furnace. But the broken lead heart would not melt. It was thrown on a dust heap where the dead swallow lay.

Then God sent an Angel to bring the two most precious things in the city. The Angel brought the lead heart and the dead swallow. God said: “You have rightly chosen.” The swallow would sing in Paradise. The Prince would praise God in His city of gold.
