Class 9 English Chapter 6 Notes begin with a date — 27 October 1999.
A young man named Prashant had gone to a nearby town called Ersama. Ersama is in coastal Orissa. It is 18 km from his village.
He went to visit a friend. But that evening, a terrible storm hit.
The Super Cyclone Hits
The storm was a super cyclone. Winds blew at 350 km per hour. Trees fell. Houses broke. Water entered the house where Prashant was staying.
Prashant and his friend’s family climbed to the roof. They stayed there for two days. It rained without stopping.
Two coconut trees fell on the roof. This turned out to be lucky. The tender coconuts kept them alive for those two days.
What Prashant Saw in the Morning
The next morning, Prashant looked around. He saw a horrible sight.
Brown water covered everything. Dead animals and dead people floated in the water. Even big, old trees had fallen.

Prashant Becomes a Leader
The shelter had 2500 people. There was very little food. People were sad and hopeless.
Prashant was only 19 years old. But he decided to take charge.
He organised a group of young people and elders. They went to a local merchant and demanded rice for the shelter. They succeeded.
For the first time in four days, everyone at the shelter ate a meal. The rice was rotting. But no one cared. They were too hungry.
More Relief Work
Prashant also did many other things:
